What causes mental clutter? (And how do we clear it up)?

by Mamoon Yusaf

The goal for the believing Muslim is to purify our hearts.

The way to do that is by clearing from our minds any thoughts of anything but Allah, the Transcendent.

In other words, we want to be in a constant state of mindfulness of Allah – aka. “Zikr Allah”.

The trouble is, even when you’re trained on how to quiet your mind and become aware of Allah’s presence, the mind can start wondering… and before long we’re filled with hundreds or thousands of thoughts on all kinds of topics that all seem important.

What causes all of this mental clutter? And how can we clear it up and return to our natural state of quiet-minded awareness of God?

It’s actually very simple.

The mind is FORCED to keep thinking about anything that you believe has the power to cause your feelings.

If you think a cup has the power to make you feel good or bad… you’ll be having a lot of thinking about that cup.

If you think your ex has the power to make you feel good or bad… guess who you’ll be thinking about?

If you think any situation, circumstance, problem or ‘thing’ in this world has the power to determin your feelings, you’re going to be absolutely attached to that thing and constantly thinking about it.

So, what do you think happens when you wake up to the fact that, in reality, nothing has the power to cause your feelings, but thought itself?

Suddenly, you find that there’s nothing to think about.

Your mind quiets down.

You automatically become quiet and centered, without even trying to.

You don’t need to do a meditation drill to become quiet minded. You’re already there.

This is what we call ‘The Psychological Switch’.

It is perhaps one of the most important insights a person can discover, because it instantly frees you of the illusion that leads to a very noisy, cluttered mind.

By discarding that illusion, you’re finally free to enjoy the bliss of quiet-minded connection with Allah.

This coming Tuesday I’m going to do a deep-dive into The Psychological Switch for all members of the Nafs Mastery Program.
