There is a simple formula to instant contentment, inner-peace and fulfilment that is known to all spiritual seekers from the Islamic world. From Rumi to Hafiz to al-Ghazali, the simple truth of this formula is self-evident to all who read the Quran:
Align your will, with Allah’s will.
In other words, want, and be pleased with, whatever Allah wants for you.
How do you know what Allah wants for you?
Whatever is, is Allah’s will.
The position you are in, is the position Allah put you in.
The reality you face, is the reality Allah wants you to face.
When we face tough situations and circumstances, the easiest thing in the world is to despair, and to beg Allah to change our external situation. This is reasonable, and totally permissible. And, I would recommend it.
And, there’s a deeper question we can ask to make sure we’re really content with Allah’s decree:
Would it be okay with you if your circumstance and situation didn’t change?
Would you still be pleased and totally content with Allah’s will, even if it doesn’t match up to your personal preferences and desires for your life?
No…?
This seems like an impossible ask, until we gain some insight into the Inside-Out nature of life…
- The worst thing that you can possibly experience is a terrible feeling.
- All feeling (positive or negative) comes from thought, moment by moment.
- All feelings are, for want of a better word, ‘feel-able’. In reality, a feeling is just a sensation that can be noticed in the body, so it’s definitely ‘deal-with-able’. .
To be a true ‘abd’ or ‘servant’ of the divine, is to be at peace with whatever comes your way. This is the way of the Warrior of Love & Light.
If you’re single, be at peace with being single forever.
If you’re in a bad marriage, be at peace with being in a bad marriage forever.
If your partner won’t change, be at peace with them just the way they are, even if they stay that way forever.
I’m not saying these circumstances will last forever.
I’m saying that if you’re not at peace with your life’s circumstances, however wonderful or terrible, then you’ve momentarily slipped off the Path.
If you’re ready to get back on ‘the Path’, and make peace with being single forever… so that you’re totally open for Allah to bring the love of your life to you in perfect divine timing, then this is for you:
