More Presence, Less Effort…

by Mamoon Yusaf

One of the most remarkable transformations that happened for me after going through The Psychological Switch, and that continues to happen for my students, is a much deeper, more profound sense of presence.

In other words, having a clear mind, undistracted, focused on what’s happening now, instead of constantly fantasising about the future and remembering the past.

This is, of course, known to be an essential part of spirituality and it can be deeply transformative. You’re much more likely to have life-changing insight when you’re in the present-moment reality. You’re much more likely to stay stuck if you’re fully engaged in your imagination of the future or past.

Most schools of meditation and mindfulness teach us ‘techniques’ to be present. They’re worth trying out, if you’ve never done them before. But rather than giving you the ‘key’ to presence, what they really give you is a small glimpse into the power of presence.

Most students get stuck because after having a few minutes of deep, profound presence, they find themselves unable to stay in that state.

So they try harder.

They meditate harder.

They struggle… and then beat themselves up for struggling.

“It’s so simple… why is it so hard?!”

But what if there was a way to fall into a deeper state of presence much more of the time… without even trying?

What if you didn’t need to do any meditation practices or try forcing yourself to be present… and still find yourself in that state more frequently?

Is this pie in the sky or some kind of pipe dream?

No.

It’s very real.

It’s an absolutely natural consequence of eliminating the Psychological Illusion from your mind.

Instead of trying to force yourself to be present, we focus on eliminating the source of all of that distracted, unfocused, unnecessary thinking and preoccupations that take you away from presence. When you drop the source of your distracted thinking… you can’t help but find yourself in a state of presence and mindfulness much more often. Without even trying.
