Why Russel Brand should’ve become Muslim instead

by Mamoon Yusaf

A couple of weeks ago, to Piers Morgan’s delight, a clip of him interviewing Russel Brand went viral.

Because it was hilarious.

The poor guy seems to be experiencing the ‘new convert energy’ syndrome, where he’s super enthusiastic about his new found (Christian) faith, but also a little insecure and eagerly wanting to share the word of God with the people.

He brought his copy of the Bible with him to the interview and Piers asked him if he’d like to share the verse he was reflecting on while in court.

Brand eagerly reached for the Bible and started flicking through pages, searching for the verse he wanted to share.

Then, he kept flicking.

And kept searching.

And kept flicking.

And kept searching.

This was the point where, even if you don’t like Piers, you had to hand it to him. He remained completely still and completely silent. He knew viral television was being created for him, out of thin air, with every passing awkward second.

It took about 2 minutes – live, on the air – of pin-drop silence, with no sound but the crisp turning of pages as Russel Brand scraped through his highlighted and sticky-note filled Bible to find the verse he wanted to share.

In the end…

He couldn’t.

The first thought that occurred to me was:

Wow – sometimes Allah really doesn’t want you to find the verse you’re looking for. He just removes blessing from you and it’s GONE. And there’s always wisdom to it.

The second thought that occurred to me was:

This is why we MEMORIZE the Quran.

This guy totally should’ve converted to Islam instead.

He could have used all that high-powered new believer energy to memorize verses that touched him and shared them beautifully and instantly with the audience, resulting in a profound moment of silence as Piers and the viewers absorbed the beauty and wisdom.

Ah, well.

I guess Russel Brand never got to read a copy of “Inside the Soul of Islam”. Never mind, I plan to spend the next few months working on the new edition, then re-launching it, so maybe this version will reach him. Insha’Allah.

In the meanwhile, if I was him (or you), I’d get myself ready for next week when we officially launch:

The Nafs Mastery Program.

It’s a brand new coaching program that’s designed to give you the psycho-spiritual tools you need to train, tame and ultimately master your nafs.

And the best way to prepare for it is to take a minute to do the “Nafs Mastery Assessment” and discover all the sneaky ways your ego is sabotaging your success, relationship and spiritual connection with Allah (and what you might be able to do about it).

Take the super-quick Nafs Mastery Assessment here:
