In a group coaching call recently, a student asked an excellent question:
Question:
“I know you’re saying that feeling is just thought in the moment… but what about ‘intuition’? What about when you have a ‘gut’ feeling about a decision you’re trying to make? Is that just thought? Does that mean we should ignore it?!”
Here’s the short version of the answer:
The best way to get in touch with your intuition, is to let go of the illusion that something other than thought is going to cause your feelings.
For example…
Recently I was talking with a Muslim sister who was deciding whether or not she should stay in and continue to pursue a relationship with someone who might not have been a great match for her values-wise (but who she was clearly attracted to).
Her intuition and ‘gut’ feeling was to not move forward with him… but as she spoke about him, I could almost hear R Kelly in the background singing: “My mind’s tellin me ‘No!’, but my body… my body’s telling me yeeaaahes…”
And her reasoning went something like this:
- I’m getting old (late 30’s);
- I haven’t met or really deeply connected with a man who does share my values, and who I’m this attracted to;
- Maybe we can still make it work, even though our values aren’t aligned;
- I need to get married so I can be whole and complete and fulfil my highest purpose;
- If I want to have kids, I’m running out of time…
- … and so on.
It was super clear that she believed that if the relationship works out, she’ll get married, be loved, feel fulfilled and live happily ever after.
And, if it doesn’t work out, and it breaks off, she’ll be heart broken, sad, and lonely.
In other words, she was fully in the illusion that her feelings of love, happiness, fulfilment, heart-break, sadness, and loneliness could come from a relationship working out or not, instead of the humbling reality that these feelings can and will only ever come from thought in the moment.
And, trapped by this illusion, she couldn’t hear the quiet whispers of her soul telling her:
“He’s a great guy… but he’s not the one.”
For a more in depth understanding of what intuition is, what it’s not and whether/when you can trust your feelings, then you should definitely be at The Psychological Switch live event next month where all will be revealed…
Because if this lady’s story struck a chord with you, then that’s probably the quiet whispers of your own soul telling you to go here and get your ticket before our limited capacity reaches its limit… and that tickets are selling FAST:
