The real enemy of the Spiritual Warrior

by Mamoon Yusaf

The enemy is real.

And it is within.

Any attempt to improve your ‘self’, connect with Allah, achieve your goals and create a better marriage or family life is doomed to fail unless you get to the root of the problem:

Your Nafs.

What is the Nafs?

As you may know, ‘Nafs’ is the Arabic word used in the Quran for ‘self’ and it usually refers to the ‘lower’ self or ‘ego’.

It rears its ugly head in every argument you’ve ever had with your spouse or loved one. It’s the source of low self-esteem and lack of confidence. It causes both insecurity and arrogance. It’s the #1 reason you don’t achieve your goals or make prayers on time.

And it loves working alongside social media algorithms to keep you addicted to your screen – watching other people’s successes, instead of creating your own.

And the bigger it gets, the more spiritually disconnected you become from Allah, the Source of the Universe – no matter how hard you try.

That’s the bad news.

The good news?

The darkness of Nafs cannot exist in the light of your conscious awareness.

The more present and centred you are, the more you can free yourself from it – and get it working for you instead of against you.
