The end of our mental suffering

by Mamoon Yusaf

An auntie sits outside on a beautiful summer’s day and begins to recount to her family, the story that she’s told hundreds of times before, and has likely played in her mind many thousands of times.
It’s about land, betrayal, doing good to relatives, and seeing them reciprocate it with evil. And how they can never been forgiven, and how much they hurt her. I know you know the story, because you’ve heard it, or lived it, or had to sit through parents or aunties & uncles telling you a similar story before.
But this time, I was so moved.
Not by the story.
I was moved by the fact that it was a ‘sad story’. And the auntie-gee telling it was sad as she recounted it. And she lived in pain because she was continuously re-living it.
On this particular day, I was a passive observer, not a coach. I couldn’t intervene, and the language barrier would have prevented me, even if I tried.
What made me feel so much compassion for her, and for all our aunties and uncles and relatives and friends, and for all people, was the fact that she could see no way out. She could see no other way to be, other than sad, because the story was sad.
She was trapped in the story she was telling.
The story had become the prison of her life.
I know for an absolute fact, that no-one needs to live in, or be trapped by, or recount or have to continuously re-live their story, no matter how sad.
Everyone on Earth can live free from the pain that we create in our minds.  The biggest misconception on Earth is that the only way out of the sad story is for the story to change and to have a happy ending.
Life does not need to give you a happy ending for you to be happy. The story doesn’t need to change. You need to change. We all do. And all we need to change is to see that any story is just a mind-movie we’re making up in the moment.
I’m not saying it didn’t happen. Of course it happened. I’m not stupid. I’m saying that you only experience it now, by re-living it through the power of your own thinking.
This is the reality-check that no story-teller wants to hear, because it’s so humbling.
It’s humbling to know that you can live a happy, fulfilled, peaceful life, no matter what story you’ve been playing in your mind and telling to your friends. It’s humbling to know how much time, and energy and life you’ve wasted away not waking up to this reality.
It’s humbling to know you’re not a victim, or a hero, or even all that important.
This isn’t about going from the victim of the story to the hero.
It’s about realising that the story doesn’t exist.
Realise that, and you’re free.
Realise that and you won’t have a sad story or a sad life any more. You’ll be free in a way that most people will never know is possible. Let go of whatever’s been holding you back, and join us free-birds, here:
