The Brown Donald Trump?

by Mamoon Yusaf

So… a few days ago, Trevor Noah made a comparison on the Daily Show between Imran Khan, the newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, and Donald Trump.
Now I get it – it’s his job to take any swipe he can at the current POTUS. But, as you can see from the record-breaking numbers of thumbs-down on this particular Youtube video, this time he got it ‘oh, so very wrong’.
He was attempting a swipe at Trump, but he hit the nerve of a few tens of millions of hopeful Pakistanis.
Let me put it this way. If Noah’s right, and Imran Khan is the ‘Brown Trump’, then that is a very harsh stance on the difference between white people and brown people. Because, the so-called ‘Brown Trump’:

  • Actually won Pakistan the World Cup in cricket in legendary fashion. If he did nothing else in his life, this achievement alone would keep him in the history books of the nation, and the sports world, forever.
  • Used the fame and prestige of this victory to give a powerful, accurate commentary on the corrupt nature of the political leaders of Pakistan at the time.
  • Used the fortune he gained to single handedly build 3 cancer hospitals in Pakistan (apparently the best in the entire region), which gives universal healthcare, and treats everyone for free, no matter how little their wealth or social status.
  • Campaigned consistently for just shy of 30 years on key fundamental principles: rule of law, transparency and justice applied equally to all, no matter how powerful they are.
  • Stated in his opening address that the nation of Pakistan was inspired by the Prophet Muhammad, peace & blessings upon him, who above all was concerned for the poor and needy. For that reason, he would run Pakistan as a nation dedicated to the welfare of the least fortunate.
  • To drill this last point home, he stated that he would refuse to live in the ‘palace’ given to previous Prime Ministers, out of embarrassment, when so many people in the country are starving. Instead it will be used as a hotel or tourist attraction making money that will be given to the welfare of the needy.

Now, I have no illusions about Imran Khan. He’s certainly not perfect and neither are his politics. But he stands for breaking down the walls between the rich and the poor; the powerful and the needy.
This might be idealistic and it might not happen… But it makes him more like a brown Jeremy Corbyn, or Bernie Sanders than a brown Trump.
As for me, I’ve been told I’m more like a brown Tony Robbins: I don’t work on breaking down the external walls between the rich and the poor. I only work on helping us break down the internal walls of thinking we’ve built up that separate us from our highest selves, keep us discontent & dis-connect us from Allah.
If you want to know how to do that, then come to my live event The Paradigm Shift – which is given for free to anyone who supports Imran Khan.
Jokes.
I couldn’t care less about your politics. But, you do get a free ticket if you join The Ocean today:
