Rocky Balboa's Hifz Advice

by Mamoon Yusaf

Have you ever seen the movie ‘Rocky Balboa’?
It’s set a couple of decades after the famous Rocky movies but before Creed (I think). Anyway, it’s a remarkably touching movie with some classic Rocky lines and it’s actually a bit of a tear-jerker.
The highlight of the movie is a speech that Rocky gives to his son, who is all kinds of embarrassed that his pensioner father is thinking of getting back in the ring.
And it’s brilliant, inspiring and just what you’d hope for from Rocky himself. Here it is (be sure to read this with your lower lip hanging down in Sly Stallone’s Italian-American accent
)
ROCKY to his son:
“You used to fit right here (points to palm of hand). I’d hold you up to say to your mother, “This kid’s gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid’s gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew.” And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching you, every day was like a privilege. Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you’re no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow.
“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!”
This is AMAZING advice for life

“It aint about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward
”

But honestly, it’s terrible advice for boxing (only in a Rocky movie – or if you’re name’s Muhammad Ali – can you stand there with your hands down while a heavyweight repeatedly punches you in the face)… but it’s brilliant advice for achieving anything in life that’s really worth achieving.
This speech has been inspiring me lately in terms of Hifz (memorising the Quran).
It doesn’t matter how often you get thrown off. It matters how fast you can get back on.
It doesn’t matter how quick you are at memorising. It matters how regularly & consistently you keep moving forward with revision.
It doesn’t matter how busy life gets. It matters what you’re busy about.
If one of your goals in life is to really understand the Quran and deeply connect with it and yes, even one day memorise it, then I guarantee you’re going to take some hits. You’re going to struggle to create the Daily Quran Habit. You’re going to get stuck learning Arabic grammar. You’re going to be put off your tajweed (accurate Quran recitation) classes. You’re going to be totally overwhelmed by the vast ocean of tafsir (Quran interpretation) resources & thousands of hours worth of audio programs and volumes of books. You’re going to memorise parts of the Quran and then revisit them only to discover you’ve already forgotten what you spent hours learning.
And you’re going to feel like the little efforts you put in aren’t making much of a dent in the massive ocean of spiritual wisdom that’s waiting out there for you on the other side of all this study.
But it doesn’t matter how hard you can hit (the books)
what matters is whether you can take all of life’s hits, and keep moving forward. Day after day, night after night, slowly but intelligently making progress.
If you’re ready to step into the ring for that kind of battle, then I’m here to coach you, just like Mickey was there for Rocky.
I’ll give you a personalised, strategic Quran plan that takes you from just seeing squiggles & dots to seeing the solution to all of life’s problems
