Resilience coaching leads to rapid promotion

by Mamoon Yusaf

One of the most powerful things about the Inside-Out understanding, which I explain in my #1 bestselling book “Inside the Soul of Islam”, is that it leads to more ‘sabr‘, or as I like to translate it, ‘resilience’.
In other words, by realising that your feelings are coming from thought in the moment, not from the situation you’re in, you’re able to handle a lot more than most other people, and with more elegance.
Example:
One of my clients works for the NHS in a customer service position, and as I understand it, his job is to basically tell people that they’re not getting a doctor’s appointment as soon as they thought.
And when we first started coaching, his work sounded like a nightmare!
You can imagine the reaction of the general British public when an Asian man with a slight accent is on the other end of the phone telling them that their doctor’s appointment will have a severe delay.
“All day people are just f’ing and blinding at me, as though I’m the one going off to play golf for a long weekend. Sometimes, it’s reasonable, and I can let it go… but sometimes I have to really bite my tongue to keep from losing my cool… and my job!”
And he’s not the only one. Everyone else in his workplace had the same problem. (Probably because the government keeps cutting NHS funding and are slowly but surely suffocating it so that private practices become the only viable option…)
However, I could tell that there was something he wasn’t seeing about the situation, which was making his own life much, much more difficult:
The unreasonable comments, the rudeness, the swearing and everything else that was being flung at him was NOT the cause of his feelings. Not even a little bit. Not even 1% of his frustration and desire to strangle the caller with their own phone chord was coming from them. 100% of his feeling of frustration was coming from his own thinking in the moment, not the rude comment he was thinking about.
He had some initial resistance to this psychological fact, but after a couple of short coaching sessions, he got it.
He came back the next week, and his work life had completely transformed. All of a sudden, he literally didn’t mind how rude anyone was. He was above it. He had transcended that petty concern.
A few weeks later, his colleagues are asking his advice on how to keep a cool head.
And a few months later, he tells me he’s been promoted.
No surprises there. I’d promote him too. A resilient customer service professional is a rare thing these days.
If you want to tap into an endless reservoir of resilience, no matter what life throws at you, and no matter how frustrating the people around you seem to be, and if you want to receive all the worldly benefits, and spiritual blessings that Allah gifts people who embody the noble virtue of resilience (sabr), then maybe it’s time you dive into The Ocean:
