A couple of years ago a doctor came up to me at the end of an event and he asked me if I planned to write any more books.
I asked him why and he told me about a big problem he was having with his patients.
He said:
“I have all these patients with depression or anxiety and they just want me to prescribe them some medication. The thing is: I know they don’t need medication. That won’t solve their real problem. What they need is what you teach. The moment they have the key insight that you teach, I’m certain the majority of them will drop all their negativity.”
I was flattered, but didn’t get what the problem was. Then he explained…
“The problem is… I can’t give them a book called, “Inside the Soul of Islam” because I’ll get sacked off the General Medical Council! Do you have something that’s a bit more… err… mainstream I can recommend to patients?”
And the truth is… I haven’t.
Until now.
For the last decade or so I’ve been primarily introducing a Muslim audience to ‘The Psychological Switch’ (which I used to call ‘The Paradigm Shift’ or the ‘Inside-Out’, or the ‘Taqwa Transformation’ interchangeably). I did this for 2 reasons:
- I love Muslims – we’re an essentially spiritual community that puts up with a lot of political nonsense, but we don’t let that phase us from our essentially spiritual mission of connecting with God.
- I thought there were plenty of ‘other people’ out there who would introduce this understanding into the rest of the world.
Point 1 still stands.
Point 2… well, I’m still waiting.
