Want to know one of the main reasons why I love doing Jiu Jitsu and how I have the discipline to train daily?
It’s not because of the mind-body connection.
It’s not because it’s the āgentle artā.
It’s not because I have some kind of super-human discipline.
And itās not just because I grew up watching Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Ninja Turtles movies (…although thatās probably a big part of it!)
No, the real reason I started training jiu jitsu is becauseā¦
My big brother used to beat me up when I was younger.
Back when I was somewhere between 5 and 10 years old, he used to give me a bit of a hard time. Now, to be fair, I’m sure on some level, I probably deserved it. I was a bit of a big mouth (would you have guessed it?) and I gave him a hard time tooā¦ but his major weapon against me was that he was about twice my size.
I always wanted to discover some āsecretā method of fighting that would really work for a little guy to beat a bigger guy. Because I was into mixed martial arts, I tried a few out.
But it wasn’t until decades later, when I was in my mid 30ās and had earned a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu that at one point I invited my brother to wrestle andā¦
Ah the bliss.
The joy and the delight of knowing that he didn’t stand a chance against me, was justā¦ beautiful.
Itās kind of mind-boggling that a martial art actually works really well, does what itās meant to, and can be practiced safely in a fun way, without anyone getting hurt.
Ever since that interaction, he hasn’t been able to keep up. And ever since then, I’ve had this air of confidence of knowing that I could handle myself against a much bigger, stronger opponentā¦ which is really the point of Jiu Jitsu.
The trouble is, we’re now many years later, and my brother has started training. In fact, heās been doing jiu jitsu very consistently, several times a weekā¦ for a couple of years!
His stamina is well up there, and he’s certainly catching up to my level of skill and knowledge, but I’m NEVER going to let him beat me.
So this is now my number one motivation.
This is why I hit the training videos and the gym regularly. He’s pretty sure he’s going to be a blue belt within the next six months or soā¦ and I’ve been hitting the accelerator on becoming a purple belt myself.
So what’s the point in all of this for you?
Maybe nothing.
But maybe there is a lesson in here somewhere.
Hereās one:
It doesn’t matter what your motivation is to get started, or how childish it may seem to others.
What matters is that you get yourself into a position where you’re continually doing some form of daily self improvement trainingā¦
Whether that’s your Quran studies, or whether it’s jujitsu, or physical training, or whether it’s emotional and mental and psychological training. The sooner you get started, the better.
Speaking of which, if you want to get personal coaching that not only turns you into your best self, but also deepens your connection with Allah, improves your relationships and gets you in a position where you can achieve your biggest goalsā¦ (and maybe even beat your siblings at play-fighting), thenā¦
ā¦For the next few days, you can get a one to one coaching session with me without investing the 300 pounds it normally costs.
