Yep, I’m re-naming the un-holy-day invented by Hallmark to something more befitting of the times we live in.
After all, if anyone deserves a holiday and a break, it’s the people in the land of Jesus (peace and blessings upon him). Let’s not forget that the Christians in Bethlehem literally had to cancel Christmas this year.
Don’t get me wrong – I still think today should be about love.
And no-one understands love and romance better than the people of Palestine.
I once heard the story of a young Palestinian lady, Dania, whose high school sweetheart was a dashing young man. You know the type. Smooth talker, glides through the air, star player of every sport and still manages to be a straight A student. Most importantly, he was sweet, with a heart of gold and fell for Dania hard and fast.
His name was Mohammed Adas. And when she was at university, at the age of 19, they got engaged on March 19th, 2023, and conducted the Islamic marriage ceremony, planning to have their big wedding celebration July 21st, 2023.
Now, there’s a reason Palestinian couples don’t tend to have long engagements.
Can you guess what it is?
At 6pm on May 5th, Mohammed and Dania were studying together – he was helping her prepare for an accounting test. They spent the evening together, but later that night, he had a bad feeling in his stomach. He suddenly didn’t want to leave her home.
“I don’t know why, but I didn’t want to leave her. It had never happened before”
However, Dania’s younger sister Eman wanted to share some news about what happened with her at school that day, so eventually he left, albeit quite late at 12:40am at night to walk to his home around the corner.
Eman and Dania got to talking. Although it can’t be confirmed, my guess is it was: boy talk.
I reckon that’s why they didn’t want Mohammed around. Maybe her younger sister had her eye on a boy at school. Maybe she wanted advice from her big sis on boy trouble. In any case, the sisters eventually fell asleep next to each other in their shared room.
Later that night…
…their house was carpet bombed.
Why? Because the Israeli Destruction Force decided to attack a nearby home, and in the process took out their house. The roof fell on top of them. Shrapnel flew everywhere.
Both sisters died of head injuries. Dania’s pillow was soaked in blood.
When Mohammed arrived at Al-Shifa hospital and heard that his love was already in the cooler…
…He fainted.
Dania now awaits his arrival in Paradise.
And given that this particular attack happened on May 5th 2023 (a solid 5 months before the history of the Palestine-Israel conflict started, on October 7th), way before the current genocidal attack on Gaza even started… it could be that by now he has already joined her. May Allah protect him and his family and all the innocent people of Gaza and Palestine, and raise her to the highest station of Paradise.
Anyway… That’s a Palestinian love story for you.
They always have a happy ending – with everyone enjoying eternal bliss together.
What does all this have to do with your love story?
Maybe nothing.
Or maybe you’ll hold your beloved a little closer tonight and thank Allah for the blessing of having someone you love in your arms, and for being a full television screen away from all the war, destruction and hatred in the world.
Happy Palestine Day.
If you’re still searching for the love of your life… Or if you want to keep the love you’ve got, but it seems to be slipping away into the night, then it’s time you contact me.
I may not be able to do anything about the Israeli Destruction Force… but I’m well equipped to deal with the Marriage Destruction Forces that end most marriages.
