There’s a system I teach called the 50/10/50 system where you set up prime time blocks of 50 minutes of focused work.
During these sessions, you set a countdown timer and work completely undistracted on your highest-value, most long-term beneficial tasks. Usually, these aren’t the urgent things other people are demanding of you. In fact, those urgencies and demands tend to reduce over time when you commit to your prime-time work.
This is time management 101: focus on doing what’s important, not just what’s urgent. After that, you can look at handling the important and urgent. And try to avoid everything that’s not urgent and not important.
The key is to build focus sessions of high-value work into your schedule – and stick to them.
I have a rule that helps tremendously.
If I’ve got a focus session scheduled, I always sit down for it in front of my laptop. But here’s the rule: if the session starts and I have so much inner resistance that I really don’t want to do the work, I don’t get up or distract myself.
Instead, I face the resistance. I use the Inner Salaam Method to let the feelings come up, dissipate, and disappear in the light of presence.
