After what I hope was a restful weekend for you, a lot of us are back to work and back to a rough eating, sleeping and working schedule during these days of Ramadan.
So, I thought you might like a quick dose of motivation, or a reminder of a few of the gems from the Quran and Prophetic Teachings (Sunnah) that indicate how much blessing and reward there is in what you’re doing today.
- Allah, the Most Loving, says in the Quran: “Fasting is prescribed to you, as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may become conscious.”
- The Prophet Muhammad, peace & blessings upon him, said: “Resilience (sabr) is half of faith” and “Fasting is half of resilience”.
- From this the great scholar Imam al-Ghazali, known as the ‘Proof of Islam’, concluded that fasting is therefore a quarter of faith itself.
And what is the reward for being resilient and fasting?
- Quran: “The resilient will be given a reward without end”, and because fasting is half of resilience, this indicates an infinite reward for fasting too.
This is further supported with this well known ‘sacred saying’ – something Allah (swt) said to the Prophet Muhammad (s), which does not form part of the Quran:
- “Every good deed is rewarded tenfold or seven hundredfold, except fasting. It is for Me and I reward it Myself.” Because one of Allah’s names and attributes is “the Most Generous”, we can expect our fasts to be rewarded in vast multitudes more than other actions.
- “My servant has given up his desires, drink and food for My sake and I shall reward him for it.”
And here are a few more sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him:
- The Prophet, peace & blessings upon him, said: “Heaven has a gate called Rayyan, which none shall enter except those who fasted.”
- “Everything has a gate and the gate of worship is fasting”
- ” The sleep of a fasting person is worship”
- The Prophet, peace & blessings upon him said to Aisha (ra), “Keep knocking on heaven’s door”. She asked, “How?” and he replied, “By hunger and thirst.”
