There’s a beautiful scene in the movie Creed, where Rocky Balboa is the boxing coach… and let’s face it, the life coach of the main character, Creed.
Creed is the illegitimate love child of Apollo Creed, who was the antagonist in the original Rocky movies. This is set several decades later, when Rocky is an old man, and has agreed to coach Creed’s son.
It’s a beautiful story. Well put together, with seamless continuity from the previous Rocky movies.
There’s one scene in this movie that perfectly articulates and viscerally demonstrates the power of what we call “Sabr” or ‘resilience’.
Creed is in the ring against the heavyweight champion of the world. The problem is, he lucked his way into this fight. He wasn’t really ready as a fighter to be facing the heavyweight champion. He was the absolute underdog and yet, he had Rocky in his corner, coaching him.
In between rounds, Rocky whispers something to Creed that is so simple, but in a way, it changes everything. These 9 little words have the power to inspire consistency of effort where before there was none.
He says:
“One step. One punch. One round at a time.”
This is the essence of achieving anything great in this world.
Whether you’re single and despite all of the ups and downs of the journey, you know you need to put yourself out there again… or whether you’re a business owner, and you know you need to keep putting in extra hours in order to hit your targets… or whether you’re a parent and your kids are driving you crazy for the 100th time today… Remind yourself that all you need to do is take it:
One step. One punch. One round at a time.
One feeding. One dinner table tantrum. One messy nappy at a time.
One email. One meeting. One product launch at a time.
One date. One family meeting. One potential partner at a time.
You got this.
Slow but steady, unshakable, unmovable consistency and forward motion makes all the difference in the long run.
