Building Spiritual Momentum…

by Mamoon Yusaf

SubhanAllah, time flies when you’re having fun fasting!

I spent the first week of Ramadan in Pakistan, to speak at a retreat. I spent the second week of Ramadan at home, recovering from the journey and getting back into the flow of working, fasting, and praying.

And now, we’re already half way through Ramadan and it feels like we just got started. And yet, the momentum is building. The rituals are becoming fixed. Slowly but surely as we fast each day and make our prayers each night, a subtle energy is building within our souls.

It might be hard. But it feels oh-so-good.

Spiritual energy is a very subtle thing. I went most of my life not noticing it.

It’s not as obvious as laugh-out-loud happiness, nor as fleeting.

It builds and grows as we diligently continue our practices.

When we do the basics of Ramadan, we’re fulfilling the actions most loved by Allah and most essential and beneficial to our spiritual growth. And as we do more, however little, we transition into higher spiritual states.

Ultimately, as we continue these practices, the Prophet teaches us that Allah, the Most Near, says:

“…then I become the hearing with which (my servant) hears; the sight with which he sees; the tongue with which he speaks; the foot with which he walks; the hand with which he works. Were he to ask anything of Me, I would certainly give it. Were he to seek refuge in Me, I would certainly grant it.”

This is the spiritual station we’re aiming for: True servitude to the Source of Life.

We do not move, but that Allah moves us.

We are not still, but Allah bestills us.

When we act, Allah’s will is done through us.

When we let go, Allah, the Transcendent’s will flows through us.

Aligning with the teachings & beautiful practices of the Quran and the Prophetic Way is the essential starting point.

The joys of ever-deepening spiritual connection greet us along the Path.

Eternal felicity in being with Allah, the Loving, is the ultimate goal.

As you feel the pangs of hunger, and the dryness of your mouth…

…don’t forget what you’re doing this for.

With every discomfort, bring Allah to mind, and let your conscious expand and raise the tide of the consciousness of humanity.

If you want more spiritual insight & guidance to make this the best Ramadan of your life, you may enjoy the nuggets of wisdom in this book… and perhaps gift it to someone who’s heart may be touched by the spiritual depth of Islam:
