This is a big question that all of my coaching clients want the answer to at some point.
In a recent mastermind session I asked everyone in the group this question. Not in the sense of, “What is the correct way to let go of a negative feeling”, but rather in the spirit of, “How do you personally let go of them, in reality, in your own life?”
We all experience negative feelings every day or at least every few days, so what strategies does everyone use to let them go?
The answers that came back were remarkably varied, including:
- Watch Netflix.
- Eat yummy food
- Drink cold water
- Sit alone in my room
- Yell at everyone
- Pray
- Meditate
- Take a nap
- Have a good cry
- And the list goes on and on…
I reassured everyone that I have absolutely no judgement about anyone’s strategy to let go of, or move on from, a negative feeling.
We all do what makes sense to us in the moment, and I don’t see any of these ways being intrinsically good or bad.
Over the years of study into personal development and my own personal experience and practice, there is one method that seems to have been much more beneficial and elegant than the countless techniques I’ve tried over the years.
I call it the “Inner Salam Method”.
I’ve found that it’s a wonderful way of acknowledging a feeling, experiencing the energy behind it, not running away from it, and being absolutely present to the reality of it… and finally letting it go.
This is perhaps the only technique I still use (if it can even be called a technique) and it’s the only one I ever share with students anymore, while they are on the journey of learning the Psychological Switch.
Instead of trying to explain how to do it over email, if you want to experience it for yourself, schedule in a coaching session with me.
We’ll figure out what the biggest change you want to make in your life is, what barriers have been getting in the way of you making that change, including negative feelings, inner conflicts, limiting beliefs, and other ego-traps… and we’ll explore how you can learn to let them go and live your best life.
