The Black Belt Mindset

by Mamoon Yusaf

A few years ago I was really struggling with my mindset and found myself procrastinating on just about everything important. I knew a lot of things I ‘should’ be doing to improve my life, but I couldn’t get myself to do any of them.

So, I did what any sensible personal-development-geek would do: I hired a coach. And I paid more than a pretty penny for it too. And in one of our early sessions I said to him:

“If you can get me to achieve a Blue Belt in Brazilian JiuJitsu, it would be worth the (extremely high) investment I’m making in this coaching program.”

I know that might seem like a random goal to you. Especially, given that I was investing 10s of thousands of pounds in the coaching program.

But to me, a blue belt represented me achieving something I’d wanted for so, so long (probably around 7 years!) and I’d never been able to earn because I couldn’t get myself to attend the classes.

Don’t get me wrong, I went to class every now and then.

But, to get a blue belt, you need to go at least 3 times a week for 2 years consistently.  In fact, a blue belt in BJJ is equivalent to a brown or even black belt in many other martial arts, in terms of learning time and skill development required.

With all the travelling, and the inconsistency I had, those 7 years probably equated to maybe 1 year of real training.

How come I didn’t have the will-power to get my rear end to the dojo to train every day… or at least 3 times a week?!?!

For me, this was about more than just Jiujitsu.

I knew that if I could figure this one out – not only would I get in great physical shape… but I’d also have one the keys to get into great psychological, emotional, and spiritual shape, to live like a spiritual soldier.

Then, the coach did his “magic”.

He said a couple of things to me, which I’ll never forget.

And he created some ‘leverage’ for me in a way I’ll never forget.

The insights I got from this were basically the “Black Belt” Mindset I’d been missing out on all my life.

Less than 6 months later, Chen Moraes, the Brazilian 7th Dan Black Belt Jiujitsu master handed me my blue belt.

I’ll forever be grateful to Chen… and to my Personal Coach, for sharing what I now realise is the most essential key to tapping into endless Will-Power, that just about everyone I’ve ever coached since then, has been missing.

It’s the same key that every Black Belt martial artist in the world at some point must have intuitively realised.

And it’s the key I’m going to share with all Ocean Members this upcoming Wednesday at 12pm on an Ocean-Members-Only-Masterclass, called:

“Willpower: The Psychological Key To Exceptional Performance”
