The Problem with the Inside-Out Paradigm

by Mamoon Yusaf

Almost all my students, when they start out on the journey towards understanding the truth of how the mind works (that feeling always comes from thought in the moment), have objections.

And almost invariable, those objections are rooted in their own misunderstanding.

They’ll say things like:

“Okay, I get that feeling comes form thought in the moment, BUT…

  • Where does thought come from…?

  • What do we do about the situations/ circumstances/ people that caused those thoughts and feelings…?

  • What about the traumatic experiences I’ve had in the past? How does this help me get over that?

  • What about Satan? Isn’t he the cause of my bad thoughts?

  • How does this help me change my spouse’s bad behaviour?

  • Are you saying I shouldn’t be mad at ____ ?!

  • I’m upset now, and I know it’s thought, but I how do I get rid of it? Help!?

And the truth is that all of these questions demonstrate to me that there’s something about the simplicity and profound truth of the Psychological (Inside-Out) Reality, that hasn’t landed yet… because if it had, the answer to all of these questions would be obvious and clear.

So what is the ‘real’ problem with the Inside-Out Paradigm?

In a word:

Terminology.

In short, there is no problem with the Paradigm itself.

Every student who goes through my programs gets to the point where the answers to all the questions above are clear, obvious and where their lives have dramatically transformed as a result.

The problem is with the name: “Inside-Out”.

I’ve not only been teaching people the Paradigm using this term, but I also use it throughout the #1 bestselling book, “Inside the Soul of Islam”, to explain the critical distinction between how the mind works in reality (Inside-Out)… and how the mind does not work in reality (Outside-In). The case the book makes is that by knowing this distinction, you become a much better Muslim… and a much better human being.

The biggest challenge with the term “Inside-Out” is that no-one really knows what it means until AFTER it’s been thoroughly explained. But when they first hear it, most people *think* they know what it means… which I’ve found (after teaching this to a LOT of people…) has lead some students into some amount of confusion.

I guess the biggest problem with the name is that there are a lot of coaches out there talking about changing from the “Inside-Out”, who have never come across the Paradigm and are essentially talking about something completely different… or are just blowing hot air and using those words because they sound good.

To exacerbate matters, Pixar came along and made a very popular (and quite funny) movie called, “Inside-Out”… and it’s got absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with what we had been calling the “Inside-Out Paradigm”.

That’s one of the reasons why, for the last year or so, I’ve been using more unique and – based on the responses from students – more clear words like:

  • The Psychological Reality: the truth that feeling always comes from thought in the moment

  • The Psychological Illusion: something other than thought in the moment

  • The Psychological Switch: the moment we insightfully realise the absolute truth of the Psychological Reality.

In all my coaching programs and teachings going forward, you’ll see me use this terminology a lot (often times explaining it in the context of an important life situation or problem, for the purpose of your personal transformation).

The truth is, it doesn’t really matter what you call it… what really matters is whether you ‘get’ it.

Is it crystal clear to you that 100% of your experience of life and all of your emotions and feelings come from thought in the moment… or do you think there may be other causes for the way you feel?

If you think there are other causes, you’re going to find yourself with a lot of needless psychological suffering.

If you know for certain that thought in the moment is the one and only source of feeling… you’re going to find yourself with ever-increasing psychological and spiritual health and well-being.
