12 years a slave to online dating

by Mamoon Yusaf

I have a lot of single friends, and clients. And the one thing I hear about the world of online dating, is that it can easily suck the life out of you and leave you feeling really disappointed.

Some of the dating dramas I hear about involve:

  • People not being serious and only wanting a “hook-up”
  • Time wasters who don’t even show up for their first meeting
  • People who do show up for dates but look nothing like their profile pictures
  • People who can’t string a sentence together and do a really good job of putting you to sleep
  • Men who are just looking for someone to cook and clean for them (I hear this a LOT)
  • Women who are just looking for someone to splash the cash on them (Kinda hear this a lot too!)
  • Dumb guys who are already married but use the online world as a way to have a secret relationship, without the poor women they’re talking to online knowing about it (not to mention their wives).

These are just a few of the problems people come up against in the world of online dating or “Muslim marriage sites”.

And you can easily see why so many people throw in the towel and give up on their search, because it seems to be nothing more than a big headache.

And if this is how you’re feeling right now, then I want you to tell you a little story about a woman named Leila.

Leila is a woman who after getting divorced, spent 12 years (yes, 12!) trying to find a suitable spouse. Coming from a small town herself with only a minority of Muslims, online dating was the easiest way to meet other like-minded people.

And meet people she did. Really unsuitable people.

But she kept trying..

She would narrate her dating horror stories to her friends and family and almost lose hope at ever finding someone ‘normal’.

She tried.

She was even open to relocating across the world. She gave 100%. Even after the most awful, disappointing first dates, she’d get back online and continue her search.

Sometimes she’d take a break to re-energise and re-focus, but she never lost sight of the end goal.

Fast forward 12 years (yes, 12!) and she’s now happily married to a wonderful man and has two beautiful twin girls that she gave birth to in her 40s, Masha‘Allah.

The moral of the story is, keep taking action no matter how disappointing the search can get.

Dust yourself off and try again (yes, that’s an RnB song). Because the reward for those who are patient and endure Allah’s test, is great.

If you’re feeling like a slave to online dating and would like a much-needed boost to continue with your search, then you’re going to love my ‘Meet Him & Marry Him’ programme (part of The Ocean), and my upcoming event Meet And Marry The One – both designed to help you take care of this area of life once and for all.
