Goal-setting season is about to begin…
Ah yes, every coach’s dream – the few days in the year when everyone suddenly realises that their lives aren’t where they want, and start pro-actively seeking us out to help set goals and focus for the new year.
Well, before you start down the path of trying to figure out what your goals are for the new year (and beating yourself up for not achieving what you said you would last year…), there’s something I want to point out:
Most goals are delusional.
There. I said it.
Most goals are based on the nonsensical, non-existent, impossible, irrational idea that one day, when you’ve achieved all you’ve set out to, you’ll finally feel good about yourself.
I’ve got some bad news for you:
Nothing you achieve will ever make you feel good.
The only thing that has the power to make you feel good is… (and this won’t be a shocker if you’ve ever watched any of my trainings)…
Thought.
Think happy -> Feel happy
Think crappy -> Feel crappy
It’s not a complex formula… but oh-my-days do people tend to miss it when they sit down to envision their goals.
Here’s the issue: if your main motivation for achieving a goal is the happiness/ contentment/ fulfillment/ you think you’ll get when you achieve it, you’re going to fall hard and fast into self-sabotage, procrastination, self-flagellation, and all kinds of other ‘inner-game’ stuff that will zap your energy and your potential for achievement.
In my on-demand Dreams To Destiny online workshop, you’ll discover why goal-setting rarely results in goal-achieving, and how to blast through the 5 most common ways the Goal Delusion (that your feelings depend on your goals), has been sabotaging your plans to improve your life.
