The Best Weed is Tajweed

This is one of the many, many gems I picked up here in San Francisco at Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s Rihla program.
It might not surprise you that this one didn’t come from the shaykh, but a funny brother… who seemed kind of high when he said it. (A spiritual high… of course)
It might have been a joke, but there’s a lot of truth to it.
Tajweed (accurate Quran recitation) has the power to get you high.
How does it work, and why does it seem to have the power to get you on a spiritual high…?
The Quran was ‘sent down’ from Allah to the Archangel Jibreel (aka. Gabriel, upon whom be peace), who transferred it to the Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings upon him), who transferred/taught it to his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and it was passed down, generation after generation.
If you find a real Quran teacher, they’ll have a silsila (chain) that goes back about 28 people, directly to the Prophet, peace & blessings upon him.
So, real tajweed started with the Most High, and when you recite with tajweed, you connect with the Most High… so it’s inevitable that sooner or later (when your thought is aligned and in tune with the magnificence of what you’re doing), you’ll get spiritually high, while reciting.
That’s been my experience, and the experience of millions of people for generations.
But, if you’re like most people, you might struggle to even read the script of the Quran, which can sometimes just look like a series of squiggles and dots… let alone recite it with perfect accuracy.
Plus, if you don’t know Arabic and don’t understand what you’re reciting, even if you appreciate the beauty of the sound, you’ll likely miss the power of the revelation.
