Assalam Alaikum,
Yesterday I sent a little nugget of life-changing wisdom from the new Marvel movie, Dr. Strange, and today you’re getting another one.
Again, no spoilers – just little nuggets of wisdom that are sprinkled throughout the movie.
Okay, so in one of the most tender scenes in the movie, Dr. Strange’s mentor, ‘The Ancient One’ (gotta love Marvel!), is having a heart-to-heart with him.
It goes something like this (Marvel fans, forgive the inaccuracy – this is from memory and I saw it a few days ago):
AO: You’re driven by your desire for success.
DS: I’m driven more by my fear of failure. That’s what’s kept me striving for greatness.
AO: No. That’s exactly what has kept you from greatness.
Your arrogance and drive has blinded you from seeing the most important lesson of allā¦
ā¦dramatic pauseā¦
AO: “It’s not about you.”
There are so many things I love about this dialogue, but here’s my exegesis of this scene (and the essence of the movie)ā¦
- Dr. Strange believed that his fear of failure/ success is what drove him through all the studying & practice he needed to do.
- He didn’t realise that this was only his ego-based motivation.
- There is a purer source of motivation & inspiration inside all of us.
- This source doesnāt disappear when we let go of the superficial drives of chasing and avoiding our feelings and desires.
- The moment we stop making life about ‘me’ and ‘my feelings’, we tap into the deeper source of greatness within.
Nafs mastery isn’t really about ‘you’. It’s about letting go of all the ego-based motivations that have been blocking your true greatness.
